Peter Albers, MD, is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology, Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf since 2008. In January 2018 he was elected Medical Director of the CIO Düsseldorf, Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University Hospital Düsseldorf and hold this position until 2022. In January 2020 he was double appointed Division Head of the newly established Division “Personalized Early Detection of Prostate Cancer” at the National Cancer Prevention Center of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg.
Prof. Albers received his MD degree from the University Mainz and started his surgical training and urological residency at the Universities of Mainz and Bonn.
He obtained a German Research Foundation (DFG 391/1-3) Research Fellowship at the Department of Urology, Indiana University (Indianapolis) and at the Department of “Cancer Research” Eli Lilly, Inc. (Indianapolis, USA) as well as a Clinical Observership in Pediatric Urology at the Riley Hospital for Children Indianapolis and at the Children´s Hospital of Philadelphia and Urologic Oncology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York City, USA).
From 1998-2003 Prof. Albers was Vice Chairman of the Department of Urology at the University of Bonn and from 2003-2008 Chairman of the Department of Urology at the Klinikum Kassel GmbH, Marburg University. Since 2008 he is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology at the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf. Peter Albers received numerous awards, such as the Maximilian-Nitze-Award of the German Society of Urology in 1999 and 2002, the Alken Prize and the John-Mendelsohn Study-Award of the German Cancer Society in 2010, the European Association of Urology Platinum Award 2024, and the Maximilian Nitze Medal of the German Society of Urology in 2025.
Prof. Albers led the EAU Testis Cancer Guidelines Group from 2006 to 2018 and chaired as Congress President the German Cancer Congress in 2012. From 2016 to 2018 Peter Albers was President of the German Cancer Society. 2019 he was appointed Chair of the Scientific Congress Office and Board Member of the European Association of Urology (EAU) until 2024. 2023 he was elected as Board Member of the European Cancer Organisation (ECO). In 2024, he was appointed Vice Chair of the EAU policy office and chair of the EAU GU Oncology Council.

Mr Christopher Anderson is a distinguished Consultant Urological Surgeon known for his expertise with Minimally Invasive Robotic techniques in renal and prostate cancer. His innovative approach to patient care integrates cutting-edge technology to improve surgical outcomes and enhance quality of life for his patients. He has expertise in the management of small renal masses and was the first in the UK to perform laparoscopic Cryotherapy (2004), and Firefly Immunofluorescence in Robotic Partial nephrectomy (2013).
He was an integral member of the team that pioneered robotic surgery in the UK in 2005.He introduced the robotic surgery programme to St George’s Healthcare in 2008, where he was lead robotic surgeon and taught numerous consultants.
He is frequently invited to present at national and international conferences, sharing his insights on surgical innovation and patient-cantered care. Through his commitment to education, Mr Anderson mentors the next generation of urologists, fostering excellence in clinical practice and research. To this end, he successfully established Royal College of Surgeons and European Assoc. of Urology certified Robotic Fellowship training programmes at St Georges.
He has recently published a book: Renal Cancer – Current Status and Innovations. (Springer) He has also authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters that contribute significantly to the understanding of robotic-assisted surgery and novel therapeutic modalities in urology. He has been actively involved in both clinical practice and academic research in his role in St Georges Hospital London.
He completed undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town, South Africa. He did fellowships in the USA at Cleveland Clinic, Henry Ford Hospital, and Jackson Memorial Hospital and in Germany at the University of Leipzig. Dr. Mátyás Benyó obtained his general medical degree in 2006 from the Faculty of General Medicine at the University of Debrecen, Medical and Health Science Center. From 2006 to 2021, he worked at the Department of Urology of the University of Debrecen as an assistant professor from 2014. In 2005, he obtained a paramedic III qualification, after which he worked part-time at the National Ambulance Service for two years. Between 2006 and 2008, he also provided general practitioner on-call services. In 2012, he passed the Hungarian and European urology specialist exams – Fellow of the European Board of Urology (FEBU). Since then, he has had a private urology practice, what is his main occupation since 2021. In 2013, he obtained a PhD degree (title: “Assessment of Thrombosis Risk and Prevention of Thromboembolic Complications in Radical Prostatectomy”). In that year, he introduced microsurgical andrological surgeries at the Department of Urology in Debrecen. In 2014, he passed the Hungarian, and in 2018, the European andrology specialist exams – European Academy of Andrology: Clinical Andrologist. He completed significant study trips in Salzburg (Austria), Budapest, and Zagreb (Croatia). By 2024, he had published 55 scientific papers (Impact factor 16.632), authored five textbook chapters, and delivered more than 200 presentations and posters. His university teaching activities include supervising 25 state exam theses and projects, and 28 local and national scientific student research projects for Hungarian and international students. He is the president of the Hungarian Society for Sexual Medicine, the secretary of the Hungarian Association of Andrology, and a board member of the European Association of Urology Section of Office Urology.

Dr Bianco serves as principal investigator for the Fusion Image – MRI/US -Guided Cryotherapy of the Prostate Clinical Trial – NCT02381990 – an innovative disruptive technology of the FocalyxTx paradigm that started in 2013 and by the end of 2025 has managed over 2,660 men in the office setting under local anesthesia
Importantly, he has been a pioneer in Urological Robotic Procedures for cancer patients and also in complex robotic reconstructive procedures and in 2015 was the lead author of the first Level 1 evidence study – NCT01371994 – that evaluated Urinary Continence Outcomes after Robotic Prostatectomy published in the Journal of Urology.
In addition, Dr. Bianco has served as a lead scientist involved in the PRO-IMPACT trial that evaluates the molecular profiles of prostate cancers and its chances of disseminating in the short term. This represents an important effort supported by the Society of Urological Oncology Clinical Trials Consortium NCT02080689
Other important contributions by Dr. Fernando J. Bianco include: characterization of PSA response to androgen deprivation therapies after surgery; association between testosterone levels and prostate cancer and the impact of surgeon’s experience in prostate cancer survival and morbidity outcomes.
Throughout his career, Dr Bianco has held prestigious faculty positions. Upon completion of his Urological Oncology and Laparoscopic studies at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in the city of New York – where he was a Scholar for the American Urological Association Care Foundation (2003-2005); and the Koch and Albittron Foundations Scholar for Prostate Cancer (2005-2006) – he moved to Washington, DC to serve as Chief of Urology Oncology at the Department of Urology of The George Washington University.
Dr Bianco relocated to South Florida in 2008, serving as Associate Professor of Columbia University in the city of New York and as Founder and Director of the Columbia University Division of Urology as well as Director of Robotic Surgery at Mt Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach. By 2011 he Co-founded the Robotic Surgery program at Doctors Hospital (Coral Gables, FL). His work has been highlighted by the urological community: he was awarded by the American Urological Association, Society of Urological Oncology and American Society of Clinical Oncology. Dr Richard Cetti is a Consultant Urological Surgeon and Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
He completed his basic and specialist surgical training in the UK, followed by sub-specialist training at Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne. Richard moved to Tasmania with his young family in January 2015. He is Head of Unit at Launceston General Hospital, leads the statewide service for complex kidney stones and PCNL, is a member of the national Endourology Specialty Advisory Group, and serves as a Representative Director on the Board of USANZ.
Richard has published widely in endourology and has a strong interest in surgical training and simulation.
Christina B. Ching, MD, is a Clinical Associate Professor in Pediatric Urology and Principle Investigator at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus Ohio USA. She runs a research laboratory that studies the impact of host immunity on UTI susceptibility. She has had NIH funding in the form of a K08 and R03 grant to investigate the role of the cytokine IL-6 in the host response to UPEC UTI and is studying urothelial biology in the response to UTI. Her clinical interests include UTI but all forms of urologic pathology. She is trained in robotics and also open surgery. She completed her urology residency at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio and her pediatric fellowship at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She is active in global health and participates in medical missions through International Volunteers in Urology where she is Vice Chair of the Board.
Dr. John Denstedt graduated from medical school in 1982 at The University of Western Ontario in London, Canada. He completed his residency in Urology at Western between 1983 and 1987 followed by a fellowship in Endourology at Washington University in St. Louis. He returned to London and joined the Division of Urology in the Department of Surgery at Western in 1990.
In July 2002 he assumed the role of Chair and Chief of the Department of Surgery at Western University and served in this role for 14 years. Dr. Denstedt is a Past Chair of the Canadian Association of Surgical Chairs and has served on the American Urological Association Board of Directors. He completed a 10 year term as Treasurer of the Endourological Society in 2018. He is Past President of the Northeastern Section of the AUA.
While maintaining an active clinical practice, Dr. Denstedt is an internationally renowned scholar in urology with career accomplishments encompassing over 260 published papers and book chapters, more than 350 guest professorships in over 70 countries and numerous honours and awards including being the first Canadian to have won the Gold Cystoscope Award from the American Urological Association in 1998. In 2019 he was awarded the Karl Storz Lifetime Achievement Award from the Endourological Society and in 2024 received the Ramon Guiteras award, the top honour bestowed by the American Urological Association. Dr. Denstedt has served on the Editorial Board of eight major journals in Urology and is the immediate past Executive Editor of the Journal of Endourology. He is the immediate past Secretary of the American Urological Association and is the first Canadian to hold this prestigious position since the founding of the organization in 1902. In 2023 he served as President of the Endourological Society.
Professor Paddy Dewan is a Paediatric Surgeon and Urologist who went to medical school in Melbourne, trained in surgery in New Zealand, Dublin and London, after which he spent time establishing a research Unit in Adelaide. He then returned to Melbourne to pursue an interest in clinical Paediatric Urology, research and outreach, the later leading to an enhanced understanding of anorectal anomalies, bladder exstrophy, ureterocystoplasty and hypospadias. He has had 151 trips to 25 countries that were in need of training. And, was recently awarded the St Theresa Presidential Medal for humanitarian work in Kosovo.
His career has involved a commitment to the quality agenda, encouraging research to be a core part of surgical practice, and urging patients to be partners in their care; and his career includes over 200 publications, more than 400 lecture and research presentations, and four research degrees.
His achievements include the recognition of the “jigsaw puzzle” approach to clinical problems, the invention of both the autoautmentation demucosalised enterocystoplasty and the Ulaanbaatar hypospadias procedures, plus the promotion of ureterocystoplasty and ureterocalycostomy in appropriate patients; the redefining of the anatomy of posterior urethral obstruction he considers his greatest contribution, including the coining of the term COPUM.

Prof Hadidi is the editor of the book “ Hypospadias Surgery, An illustrated Textbook, Springer Verlag 2022” and the book” Hypospadias Surgery; The Art and Science, Springer Verlag 2004”. He has published 137 scientific papers and book chapters, primarily in the fields of Hypospadias, Hirschsprung disease and esophageal atresia and has 1072 citations .
Professor Hadidi is the winner of the Pulvertaft Prize of the British Society of Hand Surgery, of Hasan Hamdy Prize of Cairo University and of the History club of the British Association of Pediatric Surgery. He has several ongoing studies on the development of Human Urethra, hormone receptors and Chordee.
Prof. Hadidi was invited and organized Hypospadias Workshops in more than 90 countries all over the world. Prof. Hadidi is the Honorary President of the Hypospadias International Society (HIS). He is an active reviewer of the Journals of Urology, Journal of Pediatric Surgery and Journal of Pediatric Urology.

Professor Vanessa Hayes is the Petre Chair of Prostate Cancer Research at the University of Sydney, where she heads the Ancestry and Health Genomics Laboratory in the Charles Perkins Centre. She also holds Honorary Professorships at the University of Pretoria in South Africa and at the Universities of Manchester and East Anglia in the United Kingdom. She is Director for the US DoD-funded HEROIC (Health Equity Research Outcomes & Improvement Consortium) Prostate Cancer Precision Health Africa1K (HEROIC-PcaPH-Africa1K), heads the UK-ICGC Pan Prostate Cancer Group (PPCG) Ancestry Disparity Working Group and co-leads the Southern African Prostate Cancer Study (SAPCS) and East African Prostate Cancer Study (EAPCS). Known for her contribution in generating the first global African Human and prostate tumour genomes, the Hayes Lab uses cutting-edge genomic technologies and big data analytics to unravel prostate cancer disparities, with a focus on understanding why men of African ancestry are disproportionately impacted. Establishing globally unique bioresources, the team’s approach is holistic, aimed at unraveling both genetic (inherited and acquired) and non-genetic (including lifestyle and environmental) forces at play. The overall objective – to establish a roadmap for prostate cancer precision medicine that is globally inclusive. A Matie Alumni – she is honoured to be delivering this address where her studies began.
Since being appointed a consultant at St George’s in 2010, he has served as the Clinical Lead for Urological Cancer. His national reputation is built on his proficiency in bladder and prostate cancer treatment, utilizing both open and minimally invasive techniques. He has mastered robotic and endoscopic surgical methods to address a variety of urological conditions, particularly those affecting the bladder, prostate, and ureter. His surgical expertise has made him a respected mentor and proctor for many surgeons across London and beyond. Mr. Issa is among a select group of UK surgeons performing robotic-assisted bladder removal with reconstruction. He is also recognized for his innovative approaches to treating patients with bladder cancer, often eliminating the need for bladder removal
Dr. Klotz is Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto, and the Sunnybrook Chair of Prostate
Cancer Research. He trained at the University of Toronto, McGill, and MSKCC. Dr. Klotz’s work has had
a major impact on the management of every stage of prostate cancer, with a consistent emphasis on
reducing treatment-related morbidity and improving quality of life without compromising survival. Most
notably, he led the team that established active surveillance (a term he coined) for low-risk prostate
cancer. He has published about 600 peer reviewed articles and eight books. He was the Associate
Editor for Journal of Urology, and the founding editor of both the CJU and the CUAJ. He founded the
Canadian Urologic Research Consortium and the World Urologic Oncology Federation.
He started the University of Toronto Uro-Oncology Fellowship and has mentored hundreds of residents
and fellows. He received the Order of Canada, the Queen’s Jubilee Medal, the Huggins Medal, the
Harold Warwick Award from the Canadian Cancer Society and lifetime achievement awards from the
Canadian Urological Association and the University of Toronto. He is an honorary member of the AUA
and many other societies.
Dr Wayne Lam obtained his undergraduate medical degree from King’s College London in the United Kingdom. He completed his urologic and sub-specialist training in London. He underwent a one-year dedicated fellowship training in advanced complex reconstructive urology under Professor Nick Watkin at St George’s University Hospital. He also obtained his postgraduate degree in Urology with distinction at University College London.
Dr Lam was subsequently appointed as a consultant urologist at the prestigious urology unit at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, prior to joining the University Surgical Unit at the University of Hong Kong in 2017 as a Clinical Assistant Professor.
His subspecialty interests include complex genito-urethral reconstructive surgery, precise diagnostics and treatment for prostate cancer, organ preserving surgical treatment for penile cancer, surgical treatment for erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence, holistic surgical approaches for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and robotic surgery. He has published extensively in all major urological journals, and sat on various urological editorial boards. He is a regularly invited speaker at major urological conferences, and carried out live reconstructive surgeries at international meetings.
Dr. Kurt McCammon serves as the Devine Chair in Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery, Chairman and Professor of the Department of Urology at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS), Program Director of Urologic residency and Adult and Pediatric Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio, followed by Urology residency at EVMS and a two-year Fellowship in GU Reconstruction at EVMS.
He is the past Mid-Atlantic Representative on the board of the AUA, past president GURS and past chair of the IVUmed Board and past chair of education for Societe internationale d’Urologie. He currently serves on the UCF Board. Dr. McCammon is a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology.
He is honored to have received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Toledo in October 2011, the Christina Manthos Mentoring Award from the Society of Women in Urology in 2017 the SIU Albert Schweitzer International Teaching Award in 2022 and the 2025 AUA Distinguished Service Award for contributions to international humanitarian efforts and work in advancing genitourinary reconstruction. .
Dr. McCammon lectures both nationally and internationally on the topics of male and female reconstruction and has authored numerous chapters and publications on pelvic reconstruction. James N’Dow is Director of the Academic Urology Unit since its establishment in 2001. His research activity spans across evidence synthesis, trials, guideline development, implementation science and the use of big data to complement traditional trial data. He has consistently secured significant funding for research totalling over £43 million over the past 20 years; including being the Coordinator of two large EU IMI funded big data for better outcomes projects. He is Coordinator of the €12M EU IMI funded 5 year project on prostate cancer big data (https://prostate-pioneer.eu/), a large European Multidisciplinary Consortium of 35 partners from 9 countries to harness the power of Big data to inform clinical practice recommendations. He recently successfully coordinated a second €21.3M EU IMI funded large consortium of 36 partners called OPTIMA researching three solid cancers (Prostate, Breast and Lung cancers).
He was Coordinating Editor of the Cochrane Incontinence Review Group and has a track record in delivering NIHR funded national trials in urology. He is co-lead for the recently funded British Association of Urological Surgeons TUF Trials Unit awarded to CHaRT. Appointed Chair of European Association of Urology Guideline Office Board in 2014. Under his leadership, the EAU Guidelines have become the most comprehensive and trusted urological surgical practice guidelines globally, endorsed by 75 countries.Co-founder and MD of UCAN. UCAN has led 3 fundraising campaigns over the past 15 years, raising over £7 million in philanthropic contributions (cash and in-kind) galvanising the support of the local business community. UCAN funded the opening of the first Urological Cancer Care Centre in Scotland, brought the first robotics surgical system to Scotland as well as contributing £2,517,000 to University of Aberdeen for urological cancer related research. He is also Founder and trustee for Horizons Trust UK charitable trust.
Rajesh Nair, FRCS (Urol.), FEBU, MSc. (Urol) is a Consultant Urological Surgeon appointed in 2017 at Guy’s and St. Thomas’. Nair has a sub-specialist interest in open, laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgery with a particular focus with bladder, kidney, prostate and testis cancer issues as well as reconstructive urological surgery.
Nair has done fellowship training in robotics, uro-oncology and reconstructive urology at St. George’s Hospital, Guy’s Hospital, London and the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Australia.

Dr. Christopher Netsch published over 150 PubMed listed, peer-reviewed journal articles, numerous book articles (editor of a textbook of BPO), abstracts, and hold lectures on national/international congresses. He was awarded with several awards both nationally and internationally such as the Wolfgang Mauermayer and the Winfried Vahlensieck award of the German Society of Urology and the Hans Marberger award of the European Association of Urology. His scientific and clinical interests in urology are endourological topics: stone disease and minimally-invasive therapies for BPO.
Dr. Bhavik Shah is a board-certified urologist who specializes in the
treatment of men’s health conditions including Peyronie’s disease,
erectile dysfunction, and urinary leaking (incontinence). His passion and
expertise lies in prostate cancer survivorship. He is a frequently invited
lecturer at prominent sexual medicine conferences as well as Urology
training programs around the world. He grew up in Botswana and currently
practices in the United States, in Atlanta, Georgia.
He is in the top 1% of penile implant surgeons in surgical volume, and has
patients traveling across the globe to have surgery performed by him.
Dr. Shah has a personalized approach to each person’s care with a
particular focus on penile length and girth restoration. He provides both in
office and intraoperative techniques to restore and maximize a patient’s
penile size allowing them to restore their confidence and improve their
quality of living.
Dr. Heidi Stephany is an Associate Clinical Professor at UCI/CHOC Urology. She is a board certified
urologist with a subspecialty certification in pediatric urology. Dr. Stephany received her medical
doctorate at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, and completed her residency training in
urology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She subsequently matriculated to Vanderbilt
University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, where she completed her pediatric urology
fellowship. Prior to joining the University of California, Irvine and The Children’s Hospital of Orange
County in August 2017, Dr. Stephany was an Assistant Professor and the Associate Clinical Director for
the Division of Pediatric Urology at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, at the University of Pittsburgh
Medical Center, from 2013-2017.
Resident and fellow education is also a primary focus in her academic career both locally and
internationally. She served as the Associate Program Director at UCI from August 2017 to August 2024
and is the Fellowship Director for the pediatric urology fellowship since 2017. She is the Chair of the
board for International Volunteers in Urology (IVU Med), an international urologic non-governmental
organization (NGO), and volunteers biannually in Africa to conduct workshops to share her expertise in
pediatric urology with local urologists.

Ansar Vance, MD, MSEd is an Associate Professor and Academic Clinician of
Interventional Radiology at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of
Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. His clinical and research interests
include prostate artery embolization, peripheral arterial disease and complex limb
salvage, as well as well pelvic venous disease and deep venous reconstructions. He
serves as the co-director of the Penn Center for Prostate Artery Embolization and Penn
IR Advanced Limb Salvage Program. Beyond his clinical and research endeavors, he
has a passion for medical education and international humanitarian medical outreach
initiatives.
Dr. Igor Vaz, MD, FCS, is a Urologist and Reconstructive Surgeon with over 30 years of experience. He served as director of several hospitals in Mozambique, Head of the Surgery Department, and Director of Urology Services at Maputo Central Hospital. He is Regent of Urology, teaches postgraduate urology and surgery at Eduardo Mondlane University, and is an examiner for the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa (COSECSA).
Dr. Vaz has advanced male and female urinary tract reconstructive surgery, complex obstetric fistula repair, total pelvic reconstruction, pediatric urology, disorders of sexual development, genitourinary feminization, and other urogynecology surgery. He has pioneered techniques for previously “incurable” cases, including fistula repair, urethral and bladder neck reconstruction, augmentation cystoplasty, neobladder, and neovagina.
He founded and leads Focus Fistula, a non-profit organization that provided to date over 1,500 free fistula and reconstructive surgeries to underprivileged patients, and serves as a training center for fistula and urogynecology. He trains health professionals across Mozambique and in Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe, and received the SIU–Albert Schweitzer International Teaching Award for his notable contributions to teaching urology in developing countries.
I have been a Consultant Urological Surgeon on the South Coast of England, specialising in reconstruction and functional Urology since 2000, but now spend most of my work time as a deputy CMO at UHSussex. I first visited KCMC in Tanzania in 2005, and my interest and passion in helping develop Urology in LMICs grew from there. I have been Chair of Urolink (the overseas section of BAUS) since 2015. Prof Ahmed Adam is the Academic Head of the Division of Urology at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and is the re-elected President of the College of Urologists (CMSA): the national examination body in South Africa. He also serves as the Clinical Head of Unit of the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH) cluster. His interest is in minimally invasive surgery, laparoscopic and endourology, innovative surgical procedures, andrology and paediatric urology.
He has over 110 peer-reviewed publications in the field of Urology. Dr Boustead trained in did his undergraduate and specialist training in South Africa before moving to the UK in 1993 and further postgraduate training as a Senior Registrar in the UK. He was Consultant Urological Surgeon at The Lister Hospital, Stevenage from 1996 -2014. Dr Santosh Bugwandin obtained his Urology fellowship in 2011, and runs a private practice in Durban, South Africa. His principal clinical interests include benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)/HoLEP prostate surgery, performing 100-120 HoLEPs each year, often managing large glands and high risk cases. Other interests include female pelvic floor surgery, and laparoscopic kidney surgery.
He attended a HoLEP Masterclass in 2014, and subsequently played a leading role in the introduction and development of HoLEP in Southern Africa, establishing early HoLEP services and serving as a proctor and trainer for urologists across South Africa.
He has been mentored in pelvic floor surgery for two years by Dr Douw Steyn, after amalgamating practices in 2023, and received further training in Advanced Pelvic Floor Surgery. He further holds a Laparoscopic Certificate from the University of Strasbourg.
I qualified as a urologist at the University of Pretoria in 2007 and have been based at the Urology Hospital since then. I currently serve as Clinical Head and Associate Professor in the Department of Urology at the University of Pretoria and Steve Biko Hospital. Outside medicine, I’m an avid runner, a poor golfer, and passionate about teaching.
Professor Freddie Claassen is the Head of the Department of Urology at the University of the Free State (UFS). He has a particular clinical and academic interest in paediatric urology and reconstructive urology. Prof Claassen is also a strong advocate for innovation in surgical practice. He serves as the Chair of Robotic Surgery at UFS and is fully certified on the CMR Versius surgical robotic platform. He performs advanced minimally invasive procedures, including robot-assisted radical prostatectomy and robot-assisted sacrocolpopexy, contributing to the expansion of robotic surgery within the field of urogynecology.

Dr Malcolm Dewar is a specialist urological surgeon and fellowship-trained urological cancer surgeon.
He completed his undergraduate medical training in 2003 at UCT. His urological training was also at UCT from 2012 to 2016.
He then completed a two-year fellowship in urologic oncology at the London Health Sciences Centre in Canada, ending in June 2018.
Dr Dewar practices general urology with a special interest in the treatment of urological cancers. He is a certified Da Vinci console surgeon for prostate, kidney, and bladder surgery. A special area of interest is robot-assisted radical cystectomy. He has rooms and operates at Kingsbury Hospital.
He is also an adjunct lecturer in the Division of Urology at the University of Cape Town, where he is involved in consultant and registrar surgical training within the uro-oncology surgical service at Groote Schuur Hospital.
He is happily married to Lucille and has a son and two daughters. He is an enthusiastic runner and enjoys spending time with his family.
Danelo du Plessis (MBChB, MMed, FCUrol, MSc Clin Epi) is a urologist working at Tygerberg Hospital and Durbanville Mediclinic in Cape Town. He studied medicine at Stellenbosch and, after qualifying, worked in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, for 5 years. Thereafter he started his formal urology training at Tygerberg Hospital, and after qualifying as a urologist, stayed on as a consultant in the Division of Urology.
He has responsibilities for the renal transplant program, paediatric urology and does robotic kidney, bladder, reconstructive and prostate surgery. He acts as a proctor for robotic kidney surgery. He is busy completing his PhD in abdominal incisions.
Dr Stephen Mark Eppel MB.BCh, FRCS(Edin), ABU
Dr Steve Eppel attended medical school at the University of the Witwatersrand and completed his Urology Specialization there.
He went on to do further training in the USA, was certified by the American Board of Urology and completed a fellowship in Neuro-Urology at The Baylor College of Medicine in Houston Texas.
He was assistant professor of urology at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and then in private practice in Memphis Tennessee.
He and his family returned to SA in 2006. Since then he has been in practice at CBMH in Cape Town. For the last several years he has been in partnership with Dr Shaun Smit.
Dr Eppel’s special interests include neurourology, pelvic organ dysfunction and pain, sexual dysfunction. He makes time for family, hiking, swimming and playing guitar.
Prof Jeffery is a Royal College Accredited Urogynaecologist and Minimally Invasive Surgeon. Being the focal point of a high-volume Pelvic Floor Reconstruction private clinic, he treats a broad range of pelvic floor dysfunction with an emphasis on laparoscopic and robotic surgery. He worked for five years in London, where he was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training and Subspecialty Accreditation with the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
His practice focuses on complex surgical referrals, his workload including patients from Cape Town, neighbouring towns and cities. His patient base reaches far and wide, including African countries like Zimbabwe, Kenya, Namibia and Botswana. Women from the UK are also treated on a regular, ongoing basis.
Prof Jeffery is, first and foremost, a passionate clinician, prizing excellence in patient care. In keeping with this principle, he continuously endeavours to stay on the cutting edge of his discipline. He has pioneered a number of surgical techniques and considered to a leading world expert on laparoscopic pelvic floor repair, having adopted the robotic approach. He has travelled widely to teach and demonstrate laparoscopic surgery.
He has broad training and experience in, not only laparoscopic and robotic procedures, but also the extensive expertise required in vaginal surgery. He is regarded as one of the key local opinion leaders in Sacral Neuromodulation and pelvic pain.
Having been appointed an Honorary Associate Professor in the Department of Urology at the University of Cape Town, Prof Jeffery is also a keen teacher and academic. He has taught and mentored a large number of surgeons in South Africa and also many doctors from abroad. His outputs include 3 books, 19 book chapters and 48 publications. Dr Jeff John is a consultant urologist and Head of the Department of Urology at Frere Hospital, East London, South Africa. He is also a senior lecturer and program director of the undergraduate and postgraduate urology training in the Department of Surgery at the Walter Sisulu University East London branch.
Widely recognised for his academic contributions, Dr John has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and the book Surgery Survival Guide, for which he received a Discovery Institutional Grant award.. He serves as Secretary of the South African Urology Association (SAUA), sits on the Prostate Cancer Scientific and Academic Board, and has played a prominent role in developing national urology guidelines. He also serves as an examiner for the Final FC Urol (SA) examinations and plays an active role in specialist surgical education and assessment. In addition, he has been inducted onto various international indexed journal editorial boards, including the African Urology and Therapeutic Advances of Urology.
Dr John completed his PhD through the University of Cape Town in collaboration with the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Warsaw University of Technology, Poland, focusing on innovation in endourology and intrarenal pressure modulation. He is among a select group of urologists in South Africa to attain a PhD, and the second from the University of Cape Town to achieve this distinction.
He has a special interest in endourology, urology education, training, and innovation. He also developed the Frere Intrarenal Surgical Trainer (FiST), an innovative 3D-printed simulation platform developed to improve endourological training.
Dr Kaestner is a urologist and sub-specialist urogynaecologist. She has a special interest in reconstructive urology, endourology and urolithiasis.
After completing her undergraduate studies at the University of Stellenbosch, she completed her postgraduate training at the University of Cape Town. She completed her PhD Thesis examining renal stone disease in the Western Cape in 2022.
She led the reconstructive urology and renal stone firm at Groote Schuur Hospital from 2010-2024. She was the academic program director in the Division of Urology at the University of Cape Town from 2020 to 2024.
She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2022, thereby becoming the first female professor of Urology in South Africa. She is a regular College of Urology examiner and the current secretary of the College of Urology of South Africa.”

Phil Matley has been a specialist vascular surgeon in private practice in Cape Town
since 1990. He is the current chairman of both Surgicom and the South African

Dr. Conray Moolman is a South African urological surgeon with a special interest in laparoscopic and robotic procedures, with a focus on kidney and prostate cancer. He is currently in private practice based in Cape Town and his areas of interest include renal transplantation , specifically related to donor nephrectomy procedures which he has been performing at Chris Barnard hospital for the last 16 years as well as robotic renal and prostate cancer surgery.
After heading up the marketing team at Pfizer that launched Viagra in South Africa and founding The Southern African Sexual Health Association, Andrew left the corporate world to focus on various health and wellness ventures. He has a passion for men’s health, and he established the Men’s Health Association in 2015 with Prof Shingai Mutambirwa. He was appointed to the position of CEO of The Prostate Cancer Foundation in 2011. He is currently the project manager for the prostate cancer registry which is a collaborative effort between the Prostate Cancer Foundation, various professional societies and HQA to establish a comprehensive registry that reports on key metrics related to prostate cancer incidence, treatment outcomes and patient reported outcomes.
Dr Mark Purdy is a urologist in private practice in South Africa with over 10 years of
specialist experience. He completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of
Cape Town and his postgraduate urology training at the University of the Witwatersrand.
Dr Purdy has a particular interest in prostate cancer diagnostics and has extensive experience
in transperineal prostate biopsy techniques. He began performing transperineal prostate
biopsies using a grid template more than a decade ago.
Approximately five years ago, he introduced and helped pioneer the free-hand transperineal
biopsy technique using the Marquee™ Kit from BD. Since then, he has performed well over
500 biopsies using this method. He has also trained numerous urologists in the technique
across South Africa, as well as colleagues from the United Kingdom, Spain, and the Middle
East.
His current clinical focus includes improving prostate cancer detection while reducing
infectious complications through modern transperineal biopsy approaches.
Dr Pieter Spies is a full-time urology consultant and senior lecturer in the
department of Urology at Stellenbosch university and Tygerberg Academic
hospital. He is the current head of the Tygerberg uro-oncology multi-
disciplinary clinic and has a special interest in uro-oncological, reconstructive
and complex renal stone surgery. He is a trained robotic surgeon and together
with dr Danelo Du Plessis, heads-up the urology-robotic surgery program at
Tygerberg Hospital. Dr Spies has numerous academic publications and book-
chapter authorship in the fields of uro-oncology, uro-reconstruction,
urogenital-trauma and minimal invasive surgical therapies in BPH. He has a
passion for teaching and empowering health professionals and patients alike,
with the knowledge and skills to better help them look after others and
themselves.
Dr. Simon Strachan is a Johannesburg-based paediatrician at Bedford Gardens
Hospital with extensive experience in neonatal and paediatric care. He is known for
his commitment to evidence-based medicine and for working closely with families to
ensure children receive comprehensive, quality, compassionate care.
As the Chief Executive Officer of the South African Private Practitioners Forum
(SAPPF) he leads advocacy and policy engagement on issues affecting healthcare
delivery, including healthcare funding, improving the procedural coding system and
governance of coding and the future and sustainability of private practice. He
regularly contributes to national healthcare discussions, offering practical insights on
strengthening healthcare systems while protecting patient access to high-quality
care. Simon encourages healthcare professionals to actively participate in health
care reform.
Darren Sweidan currently serves as the Head of the Health Professional Unit at Discovery
Health. He began his career with an undergraduate degree in clinical physiotherapy, laying a
strong foundation in patient care and clinical practice. Darren subsequently expanded his
expertise by pursuing business administration studies, which enabled him to transition into
healthcare management.
In 1999, Darren joined the Netcare Hospital Group, where he held key roles in hospital
administration for three years, followed by two years in group hospital finance. His broad
experience in both operational and financial aspects of healthcare provided a valuable
perspective as he entered the healthcare funding sector with Discovery Health in 2004.
From 2004 to 2014, Darren led engagement strategies with a wide range of healthcare

Dr James Urry is a urologist based at Netcare Waterfall City Hospital and Netcare Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa. He has a special interest in endourology, minimally invasive urology and robotic surgery. He is experienced in laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, female urology and uro-oncology. He specialises in the care of prostate cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer and testicular cancer, as well as urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and kidney stones.
